HHA, considered one of the best haunted house events in the country, lists the series of precautions that they’re taking on the front page of their website. Organizers decided that it was a solid way to hold the event but still maintain social distancing. This year, The Jack O’Lantern Spectacular will still boast over 5,000 intricately carved and lighted pumpkins, but the event will be a drive-thru affair. The creepy catch is that there’s no single standard or strategy across the nation, so here’s a snapshot of how different communities are handling various events in the hopes that the outcome isn’t too scary. With a proper vaccine still a fair distance from the horizon, many are wondering what to do about that most social of holidays, Halloween. Even with states reopening and calls from certain quarters to get back to business as usual, coronavirus cases are on the rise in 27 states as of this writing. If it’s a drive through next year we may have to pass on this.America has to face a frightening fact this October: we are still in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a drive through it loses some of its luster. As a walk through event it’s truly stunning. This is the 8th year of this event and we have attended every one. Sure, I understand the need to keep traffic flowing but I also know that at $35 plus nearly a $4 online service fee people like to get their money’s worth and be able to enjoy the intricately carved pumpkins. Others have complained that they were there over 3 1/2 hours. Total time there was approximately 2 hours. The way they rushed us through it took only 20 minutes. ![]() The sign says once you reach the Jack-O-Lantern trail it should take 30 minutes. Since I was hurried along by staff my family was frustrated when they couldn’t focus to get a shot. As the driver I didn’t get to take any pictures but had to depend on my wife and daughter to take them. I’m happy that they didn’t cancel it this year but it’s a little tough to take pictures as they try to rush you through to keep up with the other cars. ![]() Due to the virus threat the event had to be made a drive through rather than a walking event. ![]()
